When to Surrender in League of Legends? (2024)

League of Legends is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows and macOS. The game follows a freemium business model and is supported by microtransactions, and was inspired by the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne mod, Defense of the Ancients. In League of Legends, players assume the role of an unseen “summoner” that controls a “champion” with unique abilities and battle against a team of other players or computer-controlled champions.

The goal is usually to destroy the opposing team’s “nexus”, a structure that lies at the heart of a base protected by defensive structures, although other distinct game modes exist as well. Each League of Legends match is discrete, with all champions starting off fairly weak but increasing in strength by accumulating items and experience over the course of the game.

With that out of the way, let’s get straight into this topic. It’s a common question that people ask on online forums: Is there a point to surrendering in League of Legends? After all, if your team is losing and the match is going badly for you, why not just end the game as soon as possible rather than trying to play out an entire 40-minute or more match?

In general, it’s usually best to try your hardest until you’ve lost outright. Surrendering is actually quite rare in League of Legends. Out of thousands upon thousands of ranked games played every day, only 0.4% of those games end with what Riot calls “toxic abandons” – where one team has given up and everyone leaves at once. If you’re looking for some reason to log off and stop playing after a bad start, this is hardly an acceptable impetus. However, there are some situations where it may be better to end the game before you begin losing too much face.

First Situation: You have no idea what you’re doing

You’ve just started playing League of legends, so you may need special help learning how to play. If your team can understand that they will probably lose, then it would be good for them if someone volunteered to surrender so that everyone could move on with their lives sooner rather than later. Don’t worry about being an embarrassment – this happens all the time at the lower levels of League of Legends.

Second Situation: Your team is just plain bad

If your team’s communication can be described as anything worse than “non-existent,” then it probably means that you’re the only one doing well on your team – while everyone else struggles to understand what is going on in their own lane, let alone theirs and the other lanes. Sometimes surrendering early will actually help your team get better more easily; this way they don’t have to waste time losing game after game until they get better at playing the game. This makes the whole process go faster, which would make it good for everyone involved.

Third Situation: Your team is feeding the enemy

If one person on the enemy team is doing extremely well while everyone else struggles because they cannot do anything against that one person (whether it’s because they are too strong to fight head-on, or because someone keeps dying over and over again), then the game will not be fun for anyone. This can make League of Legends stressful to play, which means that you shouldn’t waste your time playing when there’s the alternative of doing something else (anything else) that you would enjoy much more than this situation.

Surrendering in League of Legends: When it’s Good for You

While some people like to play every single game of LoL they can, regardless of whether or not their team has a good day, there are others who do not enjoy playing while things aren’t going their way. If your goal is simply to have fun, then you should never surrender because this ruins your mood by forcing you to deal with your teammates’ negativity throughout an entire match. But if winning is important enough to you that losses impact your daily life beyond the realm of the game, then you need to consider alternative options for how to play without letting losses get to your head.

Surrendering in League of Legends: When it’s Bad for You

Part of playing ranked meant that you would be matched with players at or near your skill level – but this isn’t always true anymore. With so many players adapting different strategies every day, LoL is actually quite difficult even for extremely skilled individuals. And while most people are more than happy to help out lower-skill friends whose only real goal is having fun, there are some who will refuse to co-operate with anyone less competent than themselves.

This leaves these new players feeling isolated and completely unable to contribute; sometimes it can even feel like you’re getting carried by these teammates, even though that’s rarely the case. In this situation, your ranked standing is reduced to nil and it can feel like a punishment rather than a challenge.

Sometimes it’s better to lose, rather than wreck your team with mistakes. This is especially true if you are the only one who is feeding in a game, or you are playing at lower levels, but can still apply to high-level players too. Sometimes people get so upset about losing they go on tilt and play worse, making them lose even more games after that. If you keep surrendering every game at 0/5 when your opponents have decent scores though… well, I’m not sure what to tell you.

League Of Legends is a team game, and as such it’s important to cooperate with your teammates – if they’re not willing to play their part in the game then just leave them be. Teamwork is also very important when winning – being solo-carrying games isn’t easy especially on low Elo, but there are things you can do that will help your odds of success.

Some people think high elo has so much more teamwork than lower elos though, which is not really true unless you get into team queue ranked 5s or 3v3 premade – maybe it’s more about using voice chat instead of typing? I’m not sure… getting back to the point though, it’s never good to surrender multiple games in a row unless you’re just trying to troll your opponents or something – I mean sure, if they’re fed and just farming minions with their hands behind their backs then go for it, but usually, that isn’t the case even in high Elo.

Surrendering in League of Legends: Tilting

Even if you don’t play ranked often or aren’t all that invested in winning every single match until you hit your 30th win, tilting is still bad for everyone’s moods and attitudes. After losing a few games fairly quickly, some people just give up as soon as they see their chances at victory dropping faster than they can say “gg” on chat.

If you have had one or two bad games but are determined not to let those games impact your future performance, you should probably just keep playing. If you’ve lost faith in your ability to win and every game seems like a no-win scenario, it may be time to log off and try again later.

Surrendering in League of Legends: When It’s Time to Quit the Game Altogether

It’s harsh, but there are some moments when surrendering is really the best thing for everyone involved. Maybe you’re having such a bad day that it feels like nothing will ever go right; maybe you’re expecting too much from yourself or need more practice, or maybe certain teammates simply aren’t cut out for competitive play, and the sooner they accept this fact, the better off everyone will be.

Sometimes it’s better not to waste anyone’s time by prolonging the inevitable. If League of Legends isn’t fun for you right now, then just log off and come back another day. If it still isn’t fun for you when your return, and you often-times find yourself letting the game get to your head, then maybe it’s time you consider dropping the game altogether. (We all know you won’t, it’s okay though, we’ve all been there)

Finalizing Words

In the end, some games just aren’t as fun as others. It may be best to hold off on playing ranked for a little while if you don’t feel like your performance is up to par or if certain teammates make it no fun at all. But finishing every game before surrendering is important for increasing your rank and maintaining a level of competitive spirit without going overboard and having nothing else to look forward to from day-to-day.

And sometimes, the only way out of a truly unfun situation is by summoning that courage inside yourself that lets you know when it’s time to stand up, cheer up, and simply walk away from what isn’t worth your time.
