Why is ventilation important for my health?

Today’s standard for all new energy efficient homes is to make them as airtight and as well insulated as possible, install double or triple-glazed windows and sealed doors to ensure there are no draughts (and to keep in line with energy efficiency levels). With these increased standards homes must comply with building control regulations which state that in any residential property, ventilation must be circulated continuously throughout the whole building. Simply opening a window is considered efficient ventilation, but does that create the cleanest living environment?
